Social Networking – No two sites are the same
It is important to remember that no two social networking sites are the same. Yes, you have the ability to connect with people, provide information, communicate, and search for things/people of interest on these sites, but similarities in usage do not mean that all social networking sites are one in the same. Each site has its own etiquette for “proper usage”, so it is crucial that you know what is expected of you, what you should expect from others, and what makes one site more unique than another.
The reason I wanted to write about this subject is because more and more people are beginning to integrate their Twitter accounts into their Facebook profiles and Fan Pages. What makes me personally nervous about this integration is the fact that the sites are different, your connections tend to be different, and therefore, your messages could be different. I look at my Facebook Friends and see around 700 people who I know (somehow…), but my Twitter account consists of roughly 300 followers; of which I personally know 20. So, this being said, should my Facebook status messages be identical to my Tweets? Well, that really is a personal preference, but I feel that I need to say things differently on different sites (because the audiences are different). For instance, imagine that you went to a wedding in Las Vegas Friday night. Now, think about how the stories will be different between what you tell your best friend, your neighbor, and your boss. These “audiences” are different, so it is understandable that the messages would probably be different.
As you move forward with your social media efforts, please keep these things in mind as you decide which route you wish to take. The valuable thing to take away from this blog entry is that you can deliver the same message in different ways, so be conscious of your audience to ensure you are sending the right message to the people you wish to reach. If you are not doing a good job, I bet your competitors are…
