Twitter to Monetize Their Userbase

By Tim Barsness | August 21, 2009

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has confirmed direction toward a revenue model.  Their famed google apps leak noted their first revenue in quarter 3 of this year.  Half way through quarter 3, we still haven’t seen a move on this front, but it looks like things are moving forward.

The twitter model will be to charge businesses for upgraded profiles and other features while keeping ordinary user accounts free.  They might also roll out business-oriented APIs.  There haven’t been any details about what that might be, but it seems like they are working on easier ways to find and connect with potential local customers, higher API limits and more powerful search tools.

This is all very good news.  I don’t expect the core functionality of Twitter to change and this will allow it to be leveraged easier and more efficiently.
